2023 Early Development Instrument (EDI) Data Now Available

The summary results for Early Development Instrument (EDI) results for Waterloo Region are now publicly available! The EDI is a research-based tool developed by the Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University. The results are a snapshot of children’s developmental health at school entry for Senior Kindergarten in Waterloo Region. It provides data on five key areas:

  • Physical Health and Wellbeing: Are children healthy, independent, and well-rested?
  • Social Competence: Do children play well with others, share, and show self-confidence?
  • Emotional Maturity: Can children concentrate, help others, and manage emotions?
  • Language and Cognitive Development: Are children interested in reading, writing, and problem-solving?
  • Communication Skills and General Knowledge: Can children effectively express themselves and share what they know?

EDI data provides a snapshot of early childhood development in Waterloo Region and across Ontario. It highlights areas of strength and identifies where additional support may be needed. This data helps schools, non-profits, and policymakers identify strengths and areas needing support to improve early childhood development.
